Cryptic Studios is currently looking for an exceptional Director of Engineering to lead the engineering team of around 45 staff and set the technology agenda for the studio.

The ideal candidate demonstrates personnel leadership skills, proven technical competence, and the ability to collaborate with others to achieve business objectives.

As a major player in the online video game market, Cryptic develops and maintains a proprietary game engine for Windows and console platforms that delivers a scalable and performant platform for multiple live and in-development titles.  We pride ourselves on our commitment to a high quality engineering team and to stable, long-lived systems.

Every day you could be  

  • Managing a talented team of software engineers, technical producers, and software QA, both directing their work and guiding their career development
  • Overseeing the ongoing development of Cryptic’s proprietary video game engine that spans every aspect of online games, including graphics, AI, animation, FX, databases, networked servers, and custom game-play components such as missions, combat, and action
  • Overseeing the operational support for Cryptic’s live titles, ensuring maximum uptime through software support for the publisher’s NOC and maintenance staff
  • Collaborating with the leadership of both live and in-development video game titles to plan and execute new features and improvements to the game engine that have real business impact
  • Drive the recruiting process for engineers, setting the standards and evaluating candidates at each stage of the hiring process
  • Participating as a director of the studio with direct input and participation in shaping Cryptic’s future
  • Negotiating software deals and maintaining relationships with software vendors and with platform vendors, such as the major console players

What we need to see  

  • Demonstrated experience managing large, multi-team software development efforts in the video game industry
  • Broad experience with software systems used in video game development
  • The ability to communicate clearly and concisely
  • A calm, positive, and professional attitude while working under multiple project deadlines
  • 4-year degree or equivalent experience in software development

What we’d like to see  

  • Proficiency in C and C++ programming and debugging in order to provide input and guidance to the team
  • Experience with tools and middleware used in the video game industry
  • Passion for gaming and for online games in particular
